Selma Blair Breaks Her Silence and Reveals Her Struggles Living With MS
Selma Blair may have dominated the entertainment industry with her formidable acting skills, but the renowned actress reveals she’s currently battling with multiple sclerosis. She also admitted how her life turned upside down as she struggled to live and function well while having this medical illness. Let us uncover how Blair stood up to fight her disease in this emotional confession.
The Confession
Back in October 2018, Selena Blair opened up about her multiple sclerosis as well as the struggles she endured battling this illness. In an Instagram post, Blair said this neurodegenerative brain disease makes her uncomfortable. She also has difficulty keeping her anxiety at bay since her social activities were a lot more limited now that she’s practically disabled. Blair continued that sometimes she has to be on complete bed rest after suffering from an attack.
Blair recalled how she once spent a weekend in New York City, expecting to relax and unwind from her hectic schedule. However, it turned out to be a nightmare after she started getting attacks and felt as if her brain was on fire while her body was freezing. The uncomfortable feeling made it difficult for Blair to get proper sleep during the nights. This sleep deprivation would result in Blair having trouble staying awake while attending meetings and work-related engagements since she’s sleep-deprived.
The Emotional and Mental Turmoil
Aside from the physical exhaustion, Blair also opened up about how her MS affected her mental and emotional health. There were times she felt genuinely alone even though she was receiving plenty of love, support, and appreciation from her family and friends. When asked how the renowned actress copes up with her illness, Blair says that she has no other choice but to live her best life despite the disability.
Sometimes she chokes up when she thinks about all the pain she has endured because of this condition. However, her heart is still filled with hope and determination as she challenged herself to walk around and stay active. According to medical experts, most MS patients struggle with walking because the disease attacks the central nervous system, inhibiting the coordination between your body and brain.
The Positive Outlook
It’s precisely why Blair suffers from dizziness, difficulty walking, fatigue, and vertigo. Blair also revealed how she uses a cane to give her support while walking. The renowned actress also says that the cane serves as a warning to the people around her that Blair might trip or cause an accident while walking. Despite the struggles she’s enduring, Blair says her smiles will always remain genuine.
She treats her illness as a challenge she needs to overcome, and the excruciating pain the actress experiences only make her stronger and more thankful for the life she has. Blair also reveals she keeps herself busy with appointments and projects to divert her attention from her illness. Most of all, she soaks in love whenever she can. Blair takes every opportunity to bond with her family and friends to remember how she’s well-loved and appreciated.
