This herbal remedy is a known medicinal treatment and is distributed in the pharmacies of the United States and the United Kingdom. It is also known to cure many diseases and illnesses. But did you know that ginkgo biloba is mainly used in China and Asian countries as a remedy to fight against mental illnesses such as depression and it aids in retaining your memory?

In a study conducted by Chinese researchers in Nanjing University Medical School, for 6 months, the experts had revealed that those patients who drank or consumed ginkgo biloba had shown significant scores and skills in cognitive improvement and memory retention. All 330 Chinese participants already suffered an ischaemic stroke when the clinical trial began. They were instructed to consume 450 mg of ginkgo biloba as part of their daily prescription. In addition to that, they also took their aspirin medication.

A stroke occurs when a significant portion of the brain stops receiving blood supply, hence, it deteriorates the brain’s function which can affect its deductive reasoning, motor skills, and even organizational skills. After the clinical trial, the researchers found out that the gingko biloba protected the brain cells from more deteriorating, and its eventual death. The gingko biloba has the medicinal property of increasing the blood flow in arteries to restore blood supply to the brain. Aside from that, it is said to halt the patient’s cognitive decline. Although health experts also reiterated that the clinical trial must be continued for a longer period of time in order to test its affectivity in a long-term treatment.

Classifications of Stroke

Classifications and Severity of Stroke

There are about three classifications of stroke a patient may suffer depending on the severity of the disease and its effects. They are:

  • Transient ischaemic attacks – this stroke is also known as the “mini-stroke” – The symptoms usually go away within 24 hours. At most, it can go within an hour. In this kind of stroke, no muscles or portions of your body are heavily affected or are malfunctioning.
  • Minor Stroke – This is also considered a mild stroke. Although this symptom may last more than 24 hours. Some muscles may become paralyzed temporarily.
  • Major Stroke – This is where the stroke may last for a few months. The body may undergo comatose and the muscles start to deteriorate. It’s also possible that significant muscles or portions of your body may suffer paralysis.

The Chinese health experts urged the research group conducting the study to undergo a large-scale clinical trial to test its long-term affectivity. A recommendation was given to the researchers to continue exploring their studies in other areas or classifications of stroke. Aside from that, the patients must also take a neuropsychological test before the new trial starts. After that, a periodic update and clinical results must be implemented in between 12 days, 30, up to 180 days to test if there will be a significant improvement in their overall cognitive function.
