What Is Dehydration?
To understand whether coffee dehydrates you or not, let’s first understand what dehydration is. Dehydration is the loss of water from the body due to various reasons. It can occur due to sweating, urination, and breathing.
In simple terms, any activity that can expel water from the body can lead to dehydration.
The Science: How Coffee Affects Hydration?
The science behind dehydration and coffee is quite simple. Coffee is a diuretic, which means that it stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine. This activity can lead to the loss of water from the body, and hence, many people believe that coffee dehydrates you. However, research does not support the claim.
In a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers found that moderate coffee consumption does not lead to dehydration in healthy individuals. They concluded that caffeine-containing beverages consumed in moderation do not have a significant effect on hydration status in healthy populations.

How Much Coffee Is Too Much?
The key to avoiding dehydration is to not overdo it. The European Food Safety Authority recommends that adults should consume no more than 400mg of caffeine per day, which is equivalent to 4 cups of coffee. Consuming more than that can lead to the expulsion of too much water from the body and lead to dehydration.
Stay Hydrated While Drinking Coffee
If you are a coffee lover and worried about dehydration, there are a few things you can do to stay hydrated. Firstly, drink a glass of water with your coffee to ensure that you are replenishing the fluids in your body.
Secondly, do not overdo it. And ensure that you are consuming coffee in moderation.
Thirdly, it is always important to prioritize drinking enough water throughout the day. Of course, regardless of what else you are consuming.

Parting Thoughts
It is no secret that coffee is not a significant contributor to dehydration. Moderate coffee consumption does not lead to dehydration in healthy people. Though coffee is a diuretic, it does not have a significant effect on hydration status in healthy populations.
However, it is essential to not overdo it. And to consume coffee in moderation. Do not forget to drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated and avoid any dehydration issues. Simply because coffee can help you dehydrate, drinking enough water will cover that. And you will not struggle with any dehydration issues.
