Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) Under Fire After Banning Controversial Words
After the controversial issue of net neutrality repeal, the Trump administration is now under fire because of banning some words for the CDC to use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which has the sole mission of protect the lives of American citizens, are now under fire after President Trump issued an executive order to ban the usage of words for the said agency. This is in lieu of the release of the 2018 budget.
Trump Banning Controversial Words Impose a Risks on America’s Public Health
Last Thursday, the Trump administration had released a “menu” of the said banned words. Among those seven words included in the ban are:
- fetus
- diversity
- transgender
- entitlement
- vulnerable
- evidence-based
- science-based
Trump also urges the CDC to be creative and find alternative words for the said banned words. For example, instead of saying “This science-based study reveals that . . . “, the CDC should revise it to “The CDC recommends the following procedures following the scientific standards and community guidelines “. One might say that this executive order is relatively simple to follow because the English language is broad and full of synonyms and antonym words to fill in, however, the current scientific studies conducted between the correlations of Zika virus to “fetuses” may face a difficulty in finding an alternative word.
The apparent “ridiculous” word ban issued by the administration draws out yet another negative feedback and ire from the masses, especially from the agency itself. They were questioning the sincerity and credibility of the said word ban order. The scientists and medical experts cry foul over the recent order claiming that the government wanted to downplay their profession and mission.
Rising Backlash Are Expected by the CDC Analysts After the Word Ban Continues to Spread on the Internet
The Health and Human Services also commented on the said statement and the organization’s agency director Brenda Fitzgerald also reiterated that science will remain and continue to be the foundation of their work. They will not be dictated whether or not to use such words in conducting their scientific investigations.
Furthermore, the NGO lambasted the administration for being insensitive and reckless about these derogatory words. They reiterated that the banning of words is a form of discrimination. For instance, the Trump administration blatantly discriminated the LGBT community by banning the word “transgender”. According to Mara Keisling, it’s very insulting to deny the existence of the transgender community.
Moreover, the government is depriving the community of their right to live and access to adequate public health because the continuous ban process may affect scientific and health research. If this continues, the executive director for National Transgender Equality won’t doubt that it will Trump’s impulsive and reckless decisions may produce dangerous complications. She claims that the government might eventually kill every American with their ridiculous plans and orders.
The Public Suspects the banning Of Words Was a Result of Pleasing Few Republican Conservatives
The public up roared this recent decision of the government in which they suspected was a “compromise” act to please the Republican conservatives. Since the budget hearing is currently ongoing in the Bicameral Congress, they suspected that in order for Trump to get the budget support he wants, he inked a dangerous deal in order for the conservatives to approve his budget proposal. Aside from the CDC, the public is also concern on whether or not the other medical agencies also took the initiative to propose the word ban. The Food and Drug Administration, on the other hand, stated that they didn’t receive instructions to ban some words.
It can also be remembered that ever since Trump ascended the office, he’s been in constant clash with the public health agencies because of his controversial “America First” campaign. Trump dislikes extending foreign aid first over the science itself. Moreover, Trump is also under criticism for providing a tight budget or budget cut in overseas medical works. He reiterated that the attending physicians and nurses must serve the American people first before extending their medical mission overseas. However, this seems to be in a tight spot since even some of the Republican legislators acknowledge the importance of such overseas medical work in order to fight a looming pandemic outbreak before it reaches the country. One way of prevention is through investing in overseas medical work.
