Lonely with Law: Why Lawyers Are Unhappy
Being a lawyer seems like a huge thing, it’s a profession that a lot of people look up to. However, it’s not always what it’s believed to be. Studies have shown that 56% of lawyers have experienced dissatisfaction with their work.
Some lawyers have been expressing their disappointment with their careers, saying how frustrated or bored they are. One cause of concern is also unpredictable working hours and poor management skills.
Others do not realize the cause for their unhappiness, and this can actually become a hindrance to finding a solution. Once that problem is identified, this will serve as the first step towards the better path for you, maybe even a career change. If you are one of those people who are going through the same dilemma, there are a few things you might want to consider to better understand your situation.
The Traditional Point of View
The usual reasons that people become dissatisfied with their work can be: stressful working hours, having to deal with difficult situations and people, the heavy workload that can become very taxing to the point of compromising your health.
It could also be due to the people around you. Co-workers that you do not agree with, clients and their cases which you do not necessarily feel passionate about, going against other lawyers that might be very hard to deal with.
And this is all on top of one of the greatest challenges of all: financial struggles such as debt from law school. Just as you’re struggling to survive with your work now, you’re still trying to catch up with money matters. These are just some examples of what might be bothering you, however, there also might be deeper reasons that is causing your mind to be troubled.
Maybe You Are Not In The Right Place
Maybe the reason why you have become so unmotivated in your work as a lawyer is because you are not meant to be one in the first place. And it’s difficult when you are in a situation that you feel you are trapped in. You want to break free, but the idea of leaving a safe and secure job is quite daunting. It will not be an easy decision, but it might be worth the risk.
Luckily, there are a lot of options that you can look into if you want to explore other fields and find what feels right for you. There are sites such as LinkedIn that has an array of job opportunities, you might have friends or colleagues that can offer an alternative for you, there are even coaching programs that can help you find your ideal career.
There is always something for everybody, and it does not have to be in a path that you see most people going. You have to go to a place that you actually want to be in to feel fulfillment in what you do.
And once you find that, once you find that place where you feel truly happy, you will never have to work a day in your life. Not that it will not come with its own challenges and struggles, because it will. But this time, instead of feeling defeated, you will feel motivated and grow into the best possible version of yourself.
