Fight The Afternoon Energy Slump Without Caffeine By Following These Practical Tips
Everyone is familiar with that sudden productivity slump or tiredness that usually happens in the mid-afternoon or after a huge lunch. While drinking a cup of coffee for an instant energy boost may seem like a great way to combat this, caffeinating isn’t the only option.
In fact, there are plenty of healthier alternatives that are just as effective and don’t come with the caffeine crash associated with drinking coffee or energy drinks. Here are some of the methods people should try to fight the dreaded afternoon slump.
The Power of Citrus
Eating or even smelling citrus fruits like oranges have positive health impacts for people. According to the Chemistry Central Journal, citrus essential oils can reduce inflammation in the lungs oil of patients when inhaled. The same study also found that consuming citrus flavonoids helps in preventing starch digestion. Starchy foods are associated with chronic fatigue.
Getting Enough Sun
The body produces a hormone called melatonin as a way to regulate sleep. Not getting enough sun exposure can lead the body to produce more of it leading one to feel sleepy even though it’s not yet night time.
To balance the production of the hormone, people are recommended to soak up direct sunlight for at least 15 to 20 minutes. One can do this by taking a short walk outside after eating lunch or lounging at a particularly sunny spot in one’s home or workplace.
Eucalyptus & Peppermint Oils
Another proven way to fight fatigue and to feel energized is to use peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil. One can enjoy these benefits by loading up their diffuser with the said oils or using a balm, which uses these substances as a primary ingredient. Just rub a bit of balm between the fingers and gently dab them onto the area of the temples and forehead as a quick pick-me-up.
Plain Old Water
One overlooked culprit of tiredness is dehydration. Because of the lack of water, the body is forced to overcompensate as blood flow is reduced. Stay hydrated while at work by keeping a water bottle nearby and take sips throughout the day. Remember that people are recommended to consume around six to eight glasses of water every day.
These four methods are considered to be better than coffee as they don’t negatively affect the body when practiced in moderation. Experts suggest trying each of these options and then switching things up every now and then to fight off the lows in the afternoon
