Lemon is one of the most famous superfoods in the health industry due to its numerous health benefits. Aside from being an excellent source of vitamin C, lemon also keeps you hydrated and it helps boost your immune system. While others speculate that the lemon’s acidic substance can help treat your acid reflux. But does it really? Here’s what the health experts have to say.

The Conflicting Arguments

Acid reflux is a condition in which the acidic gastric fluid goes back up from your stomach to your esophagus. This creates a burning sensation in your lower chest area and may cause heartburn, nausea, belching, regurgitation, and inflammation in your esophageal lining.

Due to lemons’ natural acidic substance, many people are interested to know whether lemon juice can be used as a home remedy to counter the symptoms of acid reflux. A separate study review in 2012 also reveals that both Eastern and Western cultures have used lemon juice as a treatment to aid in digestion and gastrointestinal issues, specifically in treating acid reflux.

Lemon juice contains a pH of three, compared to water with a pH of around seven, which is considered neutral, neither alkaline or acidic. However, some sources claim that lemon water has an effect similar to alkaline which helps reduce acid reflux and neutralize your stomach acid. Some people have also claimed that drinking a glass of lemon water helped relieve their reflux symptoms.

In Aiding Acid Reflux

While there’s not enough evidence yet suggesting whether lemon juice can aid or worsen the symptoms of acid reflux, the medical experts recommend concocting this home remedy to help relieve the pain you’re suffering.

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon (Tbsp) of fresh lemon juice together with 8 ounces of water. This is to dilute the lemon juice’s acidity with the water content. If the taste is still too strong, you can add less lemon juice.
  2. If you want to drink pure lemon juice or water, it’s recommended to drink it at least 30 minutes before each meal to prevent the acid reflux from happening, according to experts.
  3. Drink small sips at first and observe how your body reacts. If it doesn’t worsen your acid reflux and you feel the symptoms have improved, you can then gradually increase your juice intake until you can drink a full glass with ease.
  4. The health experts suggest you drink the lemon water with a straw since the acid can damage your enamel and teeth.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the vitamin C found in lemon juice can help improve your immune system and absorb iron from your diet better. It also helps improve your kidney function and make your skin glow due to its antioxidants. Moreover, some studies show that lemons also help in reducing your risk of acquiring cancer.

Risks

While lemon juice is usually safe to drink, it also projects a few possible side effects like damaging your teeth and enamel. That’s why it’s recommended to drink the water through a straw and rinse your mouth after drinking. For some people, the lemon juice exacerbates your GERD or acid reflux symptoms due to its acidic content, so it’s best to watch your body for signals and stop drinking it if it makes your symptoms worse.

If lemon juice didn’t work for you, the medical experts would recommend trying these alternative home remedies:

Aloe Vera Syrup

According to a 2015 study, they found that aloe vera syrup helps relieve the symptoms of GERD in more than 79 participants. Try mixing the syrup with lemon juice or water to reduce inflammation.

Eating Enzyme-rich Foods

Eating foods rich in digestive enzymes like papaya and pineapple also helps in reducing acid reflux.
