Hope Solo Raised Awareness About Ectopic Pregnancy After Losing Both of Her Twins
There aren’t many female athletes who’ve enjoyed a career as triumphant as Hope Solo. The famous soccer star was the goal-keeper in the women’s soccer team from 2000 to 2016 but her personal life has had fewer milestones than her sports career.
In 2018 Hope Solo received the greatest gift as a woman after she found out that she was pregnant with twins. More than the gold medals and prestigious recognitions she received during her flourishing career, Solo was ready to give up her limelight for her twins.
She couldn’t wait to welcome her little bundles of joy in this world and to build a family together. But that happiness was short-lived until the unthinkable happened. Solo lost her beloved twins due to complications in her pregnancy. Now she’s finally opening up about the hardships she endured during the difficult time in her life
The Interview
In a heart-wrenching interview with Elle magazine, Solo opened up about the complications she experienced while being pregnant with her twins. It all happened in February last year, while she was busy running for the position of U.S. Soccer Federation’s President.
When she found out that she was expecting, Hope and her husband, Jerramy Stevens, were over the moon. The couple had been trying to get pregnant for many months now, and their efforts had finally paid off.
At first, Solo only thought she’s carrying one child in her womb. But a few weeks into the pregnancy, she started experiencing intense pain in one side of her abdomen. After undergoing a medical checkup with an ob gynecologist, Soho discovered that she was carrying twins!
However, by the time she got to the hospital, it was already too late and the athlete had suffered a miscarriage. She also found out that one of her fertilized eggs was an ectopic pregnancy.
The doctor also said Soho was lucky she was rushed to the hospital as soon as possible, as she was just hours from dying. Unfortunately, they had to remove Solo’s fallopian tube to save her life.
More on Ectopic Pregnancy
According to Mayo Clinic, an ectopic pregnancy is a condition where a fertilized egg tends to develop outside the uterus rather than inside it. As the egg continues to grow, it damages the tissues in the fallopian tube and the areas surrounding the uterus, leading to internal bleeding that can be life-threatening if not treated in time.
While it is possible to absorb pregnancy tissues to save the unborn child, removing the fallopian tube proves to be more effective in treating ectopic pregnancy.
The downside of the procedure is decreased fertility rate after the ectopic pregnancy but the doctors assure patients that not all hope is lost. According to them, there’s still a 60% chance for Solo to get pregnant again with a healthy reproductive system.
Despite these possibilities, Solo says she’s not giving up on the hope of having children one day. She has discussed IVF or surrogacy with her husband if she fails to get pregnant again, just like Kim Kardashian who also resorted to IVF due to pregnancy complications.
To prevent an ectopic pregnancy, the Mayo Clinic doctors encourage women to adopt a healthy lifestyle, abstain from smoking, and sticking to one partner if possible. It’s also recommended to use contraceptives to avoid contracting STDs.
